Design and Information Technology 1

Objectives and outcomes

Students improve the basic theoretical and practical knowledge of computing – to the extent
that allows them to implement optimal design solutions in a wide range of design activities. What is
important is computer literacy as a condition for improvement and creative thinking in the context of
design. Students learn about design-oriented software and hardware infrastructure. They learn about the
chronology of the origin and development of computers. They are able to take advantage of the
opportunities provided by technology in the design service. They are able to design and implement
optimal design solutions depending on the nature of different digital media. They independently select
and apply the appropriate software and hardware tools in accordance with the design task. Students
accept and use digital media as the foundation of their approach to the design profession.

Lectures

Basic computer components (CPU, GPU, RAM, HDD, SSD). Memory units (bit, byte, kilobyte, megabyte,
gigabyte). Digital image (pixel, resolution, absolute resolution, DPI, PPI, aspect ratio). Standard
resolutions (720p, 1080p FullHD, 4k, 4k UHD). Raster and vector graphics. Aliasing and antialiasing.
Additive and subtractive color mixing (RGB and CMYK). Colour recording modes (RGB, HSB, HEX). Colour
space and colour gamut (sRGB, Adobe RGB, P3, ProPhoto, Rec. 709). Bit rate, bit depth, frame rate.
Picture, sound and video formats. The concept of codecs and compression. Layers, transparency,
melting regimes. Colour management and ICC profiles. Screen technologies (LCD, OLED). Digital printing
and offset printing. Pantone colours.

Practical classes

Using software (Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects),
students are introduced to various aspects of design technology. What is important is understanding and
knowing the technical possibilities of software and hardware and their appropriate applications. Students
carry out a comparative analysis of selected references (procedures and work outcomes) from the
domains of composite digital image, photography, illustration, graphic design and 3D design.
