Digital Image

Objectives and outcomes

Students master the techniques of compositing digital images. Students should be able to independently
design complex projects that require visual cohesion, and are based on materials (i.e. images) of
different types, such as 3D models, 2D graphics, photography, video and animation. Students are able to
combine different source materials into a coherent, unique and visually harmonious whole. Using
relevant software tools (Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects),
they are able to prepare, process and realise a digitally manipulated image or video for commercial
purposes. They can experiment with new methods of integrating digital technologies in order to improve
their own design practice.

Lectures

History of compositing. Digital images and the rendering process. Basic principles of digital compositing.
Physical and virtual camera. Photography and video recording. Page aspect ratio, focus, exposure,
frame, frame rate. Light properties. HDR material. Layers. Colour correction, colour manipulation. Chroma
key. Simulations of physical properties (working with textures, the simulation of physics).

Practical classes

Through practical exercises in appropriate software (Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe
Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects), students master the skills of digital manipulation and compositing.
