Fundamentals of design

Objectives and outcomes

Students learn about the properties of form, process and media of creating artistic elements. They improve their knowledge of illustration, photography and graphic design. In addition, students are informed about selected works from the history of film. They are trained to analyse and compare design procedures and to think abstractly according to the specific purpose of design. They learn the basic functions of tools used in illustration and photography.

Lectures

The concept of art. Concept of design. Concept of multimedia. Theory of form (concept of shaping, composition, abstraction). The line as an element of composition. Colour as an element of composition. Comparative analysis of selected references from the fields of art history, graphic design and photography.

Practical classes

Selected drawing tools and procedures (pencil, ink, charcoal). Selected painting tools and procedures (tempera and pastel). Drawing in the function of design. Turning a hand-drawn drawing (sketches on paper) into computer graphics. Basic functions of the Adobe Illustrator program (managing image formats, correcting the layout and quality of line shapes). Introduction to the theory and practice of photography. Photography as a function of design. Basic functions of the Adobe Photoshop program (management of image formats, management of tools for selection and retouching (elements) of the image, manipulation of values, tones and layers of the image).
