Objectives and outcomes

Students acquire knowledge about the concepts and principles of graphic advertising. They learn how to carry out research in the field of advertising and graphic communications. The aim is to encourage students to research the ways of advertising. The learning outcome is gaining knowledge about the development and modern aspects of graphic advertising. Students learn how to use appropriate design qualities for advertising educational or propaganda content. Moreover, they learn about the standards of designing and using graphic signs, i.e., logos and pictograms as special sign categories. The tasks are organised in such a way that they provide the possibility of research in different media, where students use both analogue and digital design techniques. The emphasis is put on broadening the knowledge acquired in the course Letter and Typography.

Lectures

Concept and categories of graphic advertising. Historical development of advertising. Typography, illustration and photography in the function of creating ads. Graphic communication systems as advertising media. Graphic sign and its categories.

Practical classes

Graphic signs. Book of graphic standards. Text organisation in the function of advertising. Poster as an advertising medium. Leaflet as an advertising medium.
