History of Art

Objectives and outcomes

Students learn the key features of history of art. The aim is to understand the design tendencies in the
context of painting, sculpture and architecture. Students are introduced to ancient
history, the Middle Ages and the modern period. They are able to recognise and critically compare form
qualities in synchronic and diachronic perspective. They are motivated to study tendencies in modern art,
especially in relation to the early avant-garde. They are introduced to the theory of art, that is, they learn
to critically analyse the relationship between art, science, politics and economics.

Lectures

Concept of art history. Egyptian art (Old Empire, Middle and New Empire). Middle East (Sumerian art; Assyrian art;
Persian art). Aegean art. Greek art (Archaic era; Classical era; Hellenistic era). Etruscan art. Roman art.
Early Christian and Byzantine art. Romanesque art. Gothic art. Renaissance art (Late Gothic art; Early
Renaissance; High Renaissance; Mannerism; Renaissance in the north). Baroque. Neoclassicism and
Romanticism. Realism. Impressionism. Introduction to the art of the XX century. The avant-garde.

Practical classes

Discussion about the topics presented in lectures. Writing about art (from criticism to essay).
