Letter and typography

Objectives and outcomes

The objective of the course is to prepare students for the correct and creative use of typography in different contexts (press, web, animation, space mark, etc). They learn the history of typography and the development of writing systems. Furthermore, they learn the basics of a letter design and the differences among font types.

Lectures

Concept, historical development and types of writing systems. Typography design as an aspect of graphic design. Glossary of typographic terms. Grid systems. Basic algorithms and functions of Adobe InDesign. Typography design of single-sided printed sheets. Typography design of double-sided printed sheets with one or more folding axes. Book (cover, title page, book block). Text wrapping with illustrations and photos for multi-page graphic publications.

Practical classes

After acquiring elementary knowledge about fonts, they learn how to format text and organise pages containing text. They learn to use fonts appropriately in relation to different contents. They learn to work with text in the Adobe InDesign program.
