Network Security

Objectives and outcomes

Mastering the basic cryptographic algorithms and security protocols used in computer networks and PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) systems. Upon completion of the course, students have a basic knowledge of computer network security systems and technologies, such as symmetric key algorithms, digital signature, PKI systems. They are familiar with the multi-layered security approach, as well as the most widely used network protocols TLS, IPSec. They can develop basic cryptographic functions for digital signature and encryption needs, as well as establish a basic PKI system.

Lectures

Evaluation and treatment of security risks. Privacy security. Physical security. Trends in network security. Potential attacks. The possible modes of defence. Network security technologies. Standard cryptographic algorithms (symmetric DES, IDEA, asymmetric RSA). Digital signatures. Digital envelope. Hash function. Digital certificates. Types of network security protocols. Security at the application layer PGP. Secure web transactions. Transport layer security. Internet protocol security. Network barriers and intrusion protection system. Software and hardware security solutions.
