Theory of Art

Objectives

Students are trained for comparative analysis of modern and postmodern art. Students familiarise themselves with the interdisciplinary capacity of the theory of art and are introduced to the studies of contemporary art. They master the basic rules of writing papers in the field of the theory of art.

Outcomes

Students can define and compare directions, schools and fashions from the history of modern art, especially in relation to the literary and artistic avant-garde. They discuss values and concepts in literature and visual arts. They are introduced to postmodern theories of art. They understand the methods and techniques necessary for the process of writing about art, especially when it comes to a final paper.

Course content

Lectures

Theory of art – theory in art – theory of the artist. Comparative approaches to different arts and theories of art. Modernism and modern art. Avant-garde, neo-avant-garde and post-avant-garde. Introduction to the theory of literature. Introduction to the theory of fine arts. Introduction to postmodern theories of art. Theory of popular culture and arts. Conventions of scientific research and basic technical-methodological procedures for writing papers in the field of the theory of art.

Research work

Students define their own metatheoretical positions and write papers on contemporary art.
