Poetics of Photography

Objectives and outcomes

Students plan and make series of photographs on selected or assigned topics. They search for and use authorial methods in the medium of photography, following contemporary artistic practices. The aim is to find a meaningful connection among taking, processing, classifying, presenting and distributing photographs. Students compare photographic methods. They learn to manage the photography processes. They learn to define photography according to the institution of art. They create ambient settings that are the closest to the context of contemporary art. They create graphic and interactive presentations of photos (they are introduced to the issues of digital distribution).

Lectures

Lectures are based on the discussion of the poetics of contemporary art. They analyse the relationship among photography, fine art, film and literature, as well as the problems of printing and photo settings (the connection between photographic and ambient art). Students analyse the ways of graphic and multimedia presentations of photos (photography vs. graphic design and web design).

Practical classes

Through practical exercises, students learn how to define the range of interest (theme) and how to determine the intervals, procedures and tools for taking photos. In particular, they determine, compare and criticise the methods of photo editing and settings.
