DOCTORAL STUDENT POSITION
in Accessibility and Mobility in the Era of Self-driving VehiclesResearch Group The above mentioned position is located in the Transportation Engineering research and teaching group in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, see http://civil.aalto.fi/en/research/transportation/. Transportation Engineering research and teaching group has already for over 40 years made academic research in order to develop the transportation system in a continuously changing environment. The main research areas are the modeling and the analysis of transportation and its impacts. Traffic simulation and intelligent transportation systems are also focus areas. Requirements
Required background: Prospective student should have a Master’s degree in one, and identifiable research experience combining knowledge from at least two of the following fields:
• Transportation Engineering
• Urban Planning
• Sociology
• Psychology
• Economics
• Statistics
• Mathematics
• Computer Science
• Electrical/Communications Engineering
Important skills: Prospective student should have in-depth understanding of her/his field of expertise, fluency in English, experience with scientific writing, skillset for active reporting and interaction with project members.The doctoral student position is contract-based; a one-year contract is granted first, followed by a possible extension for three-year period depending on the achievements during the first contractual period. In a maximum of four years, the doctoral student is required to 1) complete the doctoral dissertation based on peer-review publications (accepted and submitted), 2) finish relevant courses for 40 ECTS credits and 3) participate in teaching. Advances in communication, sensing, and in-vehicle computing technology in the last two decades have enabled the development of self-driving vehicle technology. This emerging technology could permit a significant evolution in several areas: techniques and mechanisms for mobility and accessibility; structure and form of cities and networks; shaping of human behavior and values. The PhD-student will be encouraged to determine her/his research area of interest in relation to this emerging transportation technology and to the abovementioned broad areas. In addition, PhD-student will be encouraged to implement a multidisciplinary approach in her/his research and cooperate with colleagues within Aalto University, but also across the world. However, the increased freedom in determining the area of research interest will nevertheless be accompanied with responsibility for intellectual merit and approval through peer-review publication practice.
The PhD-student will be directly mentored by Dr. Milos Mladenovic.
